Whoever said, “Writing is fun?” Well, whoever said it probably didn’t attend graduate school or doctoral studies. Because in college and grad school – WRITING WAS NOT MUCH FUN!

Today, however, writing is fun once again and I have the privilege of writing for children – which makes writing even MORE FUN!

In writing for children, my mind is alive and busy with circus-like activity. Throughout the day (and night) – my mind envisions incredible new story lines and memorable and exciting new characters.

But as much fun as writing is fun for me – it’s not always as much fun for children. Not all children enjoy writing. Writing doesn’t come easy for some children.

But perhaps it’s because we’ve never taught them how to have fun – just writing. As parents, how do you make writing fun for your children? How do you inspire their daily creativity? How do you motivate your child to fall in love with writing or reading or math?

I recently read a good article: Making Writing Fun for Kids” (<a href="https://kidsgoals.com/" ta犀利士
rget=”_blank” rel=”noopener noreferrer”>www.KidsGoals.com). Check out the site – it’s a good one for parents.

The author stated: “If we make writing fun – children will want to do it.” One of the most important things that you can do to help your child learn to love writing is to read to him or with her. Reading will teach your child about how we communicate – not only with what we say, but also through the written word. Your child will learn to create written language by reading it.

Some ways to encourage your child to write:

A diary is a good way to inspire your child to write on a daily basis.

Play Scrabble and other word games to stimulate conversation.

Watch appropriate movies and talk about the movie – the characters and plot.

Make sure your child has a good place to write such as a desk or table with a smooth surface and good lighting.

NEVER force your child to write; instead, encourage him to write.

WRITING CAN BE FUN!

No doubt, at some point in our lives, in our daily conversations with family and friends, we have fondly recalled “the good old days” – remembering how it used to be.

Stuart McAllister in his book: Ah, the Good Old Days describes it this way:

“Nostalgia is an interesting thing. It embellishes our memories and makes the past look and feel so much better than it really was. I have a relative whose skill as a storyteller is almost unsurpassed. Names, dates, and places are poured forth with an attention to detail that is astonishing. Listening in, one can smell the air, sense the mood, and really enter into the story being …”

In the course of our lifetimes, we have all discovered, “There is a time for everything.” Whatever it is about time, we all manage it in d樂威壯
ifferent (and sometimes strange) ways. For some of us, we live perpetually in the past. We treasure those relationships, experiences, and places, those loves won and lost. For others, we are always hoping to live; the best is yet ahead, somewhere over the rainbow when things will be wonderful.

I often wonder if this is a symptom of an inability to dwell in the present. In a contemporary book called Elsewhere USA, the author cites the challenges to living a focused or attentive life due to the invasive conditions of modern technology and the press of incessant demands. The writer outlines how many of us are seldom present in anything we do. We are not present to our spouses, not present to our children, not present to our friends, not present even in our imaginations as the desire of being elsewhere overrules all else.

In the story The Princess Bride, the hero Wesley says, “Life is pain…Get used to it.” While perhaps a bit overstated (it is a comedy), Wesley’s thought captures something of the struggle, the real hardships we all encounter in our journeys across time. Perhaps the present is indeed so saturated by real pain, tragedy, or emotional deadness that the only available option is to flee to the past as solace from the present.

I certainly don’t mean (in any sense) to devalue the role of telling old stories or recalling old memories. After all, they are a huge part of what makes life rich. However, as the wise sage said: “Surely the good old days exist in the here and now.”

The little boy said, “They’re ahead 23-0.” “You mean the other team is beating you 23-0? Well, I’m confused. I thought you said that you were winning.” “Oh we are,” said the little boy: “You see, we just ain’t come to bat yet!” This little boy certainly inspired HOPE!

In life – it invariably seems the “darkest” just before the dawn of a new “morning.” But hope springs eternal. Hope is the projection of the imagination. In response to hope the imagination is aroused to picture every possible issue, to try every door (whether open or closed), to fit together even the most difficult pieces of the puzzle of one’s life. After the solution is found, it is difficult to recall the steps taken – so many of them had lain dormant just below the level of consciousness. ~ Thornton Wilder

Our life’s journey is filled with polar opposites: calm and chaos; light and darkness; love and hate; hope and despair; and life and death. And yet, we can still choose to live life to the fullest despite our circumstances. Chaos and darkness and setbacks can and do make us stronger. When this becomes our attitude – an amazing transformation occurs – and we find ourselves as pilgrims on the road “less traveled.”

It’s true, “The natural flights of the human mind are not from pleasure to pleasure, but from hope to hope.” ~ Samuel Johnson

If a child lives with praise,

If a child lives with security,
he learns to have faith in himself and in those about him.

If a child lives with friendliness,

If you live with serenity,
your child will live with peace of mind.

With what is your child living?
